Let’s just assume for a second that Celtic sign both Ntcham and Paddy Roberts, does this make it the most exciting Celtic team since O’Neill’s? Is it more exciting than Martin’s because of their age?
Spoiler Alert: Yes
Now, I’ll just get this out of the way. I’m NOT saying this team would beat Martin O’Neills, the presence of Larsson alone rules that out. I’m saying it is more exciting and has more potential than O’Neills had. Most of Martin’s players were relatively established when they arrived.
We’ll start at Keeper, he’s getting on a bit but Craig Gordon is still head, shoulders, knees and toes above Rab Douglas. And I mean that in the nicest way possible! And then we’ve got 2 young exciting goalies coming through in Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan, Rodgers has very high hopes for the latter.
Defense is pretty solid too. Lustig is getting on a bit but he’s still a great right back, plus we’ve got Gamboa who is like a Poundland Agathe anyway. Plus Ralston has looked accomplished every time he’s got on the pitch. He’s another very exciting young talent coming through who I hope gets more game time. Simunovic (22), Sviatchenko (25) and Boyata (26) might be Celtic’s best defensive trio since Mjallby, Valgaeren & Balde and they’re only getting better too. Kieran Tierney is another one who is only going to get better and Izaguirre is an apt back up too!
Midfield is where it gets real exciting. Armstrong, Benyu, Bitton, Brown, McGregor, Eboue, Henderson, Ntcham, Forrest, Mackay-Stevens, Roberts, Sinclair and Hayes to name a few. Nearly every single one of those players, not only walks into every team in Scotland, they’d be their best player. It’s a midfield that could genuinely go far in the Europa League which is a great start for such a young team, it’s definitely a Round of 16 UCL team too. The sheer depth in midfield is the best I’ve ever seen.
Then we go to the forward line. Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths, one is a Golden Boy nominee and one of the most exciting strikers in Europe. And then Leigh Griffiths, the man could score in a nun’s house. Plus Celtic have young Jack Aitchson. Enough said here.
Last year, they did okay in Europe. Considering they hadn’t completely gelled yet. Now they’re invincible treble winners and there has been some very exciting additions to the squad in Ntcham (if he signs, but it seems all but done) Hayes, Benyu and hopefully Paddy! And the amount of academy talent coming through is very exciting with Mikey Johnston, Jack Aitchison, Calvin Miller, Ralston, McCart and P.J.Crossan among many others.
So yes, this squad is more exciting than O’Neills, although not mentioned it’s also better than any of Neil Lennon’s squads or Gordon Strachans. What’s your opinion?
