Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder Jason McAteer thinks his former club would be unstoppable if they sign Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk and Red Bull Leipzig’s Naby Kieta.
It’s slightly in contrast to what Steven Gerrard claimed last week, when the former red said his team needed an explosive forward and a left back. To Sevie G’s credit they did recently go out and get an explosive forward in the form of Mohamed Salah.
So what is it that Liverpool need? Do they need a left back and forward player like Gerrard said or do they need Van Dijk and Kieta like McAteer claims? I’m sure the ideal situation for Liverpool fans would be all of the above.
Let’s look at Kieta first. He is a fantastic talent and his performances in the Bundesliga this season show that, he would be a welcomed edition to any team. However Liverpool already have a pretty stacked midfield, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and James Milner when he’s not playing left back. Not to say Kieta wouldn’t be an upgrade but it would appear midfield is not an area of immediate concern for the Merseyside club, and perhaps the transfer budget would be better spent elsewhere.
Van Dijk is a player linked with Liverpool since this transfer season started. The centre half has been one of the best centre backs in the UK since he made his move to Celtic back in 2013. The Dutch defender became a favourite at Parkhead, with brilliant defensive performances but also displaying the ability to play for the back and get involved in attack.
Just like Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster before him, Van Dijk switched Celtic Park for Saint Mary’s. Van Dijk has impressed many in England upon his arrival and would appear towards the top of many football fans transfer wishlist. But just like most of Southampton’s top performers of years gone by it is Liverpool who are the team linked closest with capturing the players signature.
Liverpool and Celtic fan’s will be hoping the transfer happens. Liverpool as they’d get a great player and Celtic as they get a nice bonus of 10% off the transfer fee.
