Bellator put together a memorable night with it’s second pay-per-view at Bellator 180 in Madison Square Garden in New York.
After all the trash talk and bad blood, 40 year old former UFC title contender Chael Sonnen went back to his wrestling routes scoring an old school ground and pound decision win over former Pride and UFC star Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murder’ Silva.
Although the brief exchanges in the stand-up game had him in trouble, time and time again he could secure takedowns and win the round on position and ground-and-pound, with a smothering top game victory.
After the bout, Sonnen gave another vintage performance going back to his antics of doing whatever he can to promote his next fight, calling out everyone from Tito Ortiz, Fedor Emelianenko and the host city itself New York.
Sonnen used the post-fight press conference to call out Fedor, one of the greatest mixed martial artists in the world. Maybe this wasn’t the time or place as Fedor suffered a devastating knockout loss to Matt Mitrione earlier on the card.
“I made Tito Ortiz tap out in less than a minute. I got Wanderlei Silva out of here in the main event. And when it comes to you, Fedor Emelianenko, I only need one shot”.
The callout connected Sonnen to his goal as to why he came out of retirement which is to undertake a legends butt-whipping tour.
Even though both are in different weight classes. It will be certainly interesting to see who is next in line for ‘The American Gangster’.
