Watch: New Video Assistant Referee’s Make First Big Decision.

The introduction of Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) for the Confederations Cup was a step forward in football technology. Providing an opportunity for referees to correct decisions if they are uncertain.

The decision for its introduction was probably welcomed by the wider football community, but right now I’d say the country of Portugal are damming their luck for being the first team to see a goal disallowed through a VAR decision.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo hit the crossbar, just before Andre Gomes volleyed the ball towards goal. Pepe then claimed to turn the ball into the back of the net, and it looked like the Real Madrid man had put his country 1-0 up.

However there was an offside decision to be made in relation to the goal, which the referee gave to the VAR’s who ultimately opted against the awarding of the goal.
